The ‘Confirmation of Payee’ banking change

From the end of November 2024, five major NZ banks are introducing extra checks to confirm the name and account number on a payment match what the bank has on record. This is a security measure to help make payments more secure.

The change means everyone in New Zealand paying from those banks will experience an extra step in the payment process, or when setting up a new payee.

For a short period of time - likely just a few months - anyone paying a Hnry customer may see the following notification (or something similar) before they confirm the payment:

Confirmation of Payee notification

This does not stop them from making the payment - it is simply an opportunity for the payor to double check the account info is all correct before making the payment.

Hint: All Hnry accounts are provisioned by ASB, and will have one of the following structures:
  • 12 - 3245 - xxxxxxx - 37
  • 12 - 3192 - xxxxxxx - 37

ASB are working hard to ensure that Hnry accounts can be verified through this new process as soon as possible.

ASB break it down quite well here too : https://www.asb.co.nz/cop.
