Hnry’s Multicultural Morning Tea 2024

Celebrating our coworkers (and their food!) from all around the world.

One of our core values here at Hnry is being lifelong learners.

In the spirit of that, we decided to host a multicultural morning tea – a perfect opportunity to learn and celebrate where our team comes from, the cultures they belong to and the foods that remind them of home!

Here at Hnry, we’re committed to creating a welcoming and diverse workplace. Our team is made up of people from all around the world – New Zealand, Argentina, Malaysia, the Philippines, England, China, America, Mexico, and Russia, just to name a few. This is so special, and something worth celebrating. Having a team made up of people from all backgrounds, countries and cultures offers us unique experiences and perspectives, not only when it comes to our work but also life in general.

Food in the Hnry kitchen

We invited our whole team to bring a dish, along with a blurb explaining the culture or country it comes from, and if it’s linked to a special holiday or celebration. It’s safe to say, the team didn’t disappoint. Almost everyone came prepared with their dish and description, and suddenly our kitchen counter was covered in delicious treats.

Some of the crowd favourites included:

  • The classic Aotearoa south island cheese roll: white bread, cheese, and onion soup mix (because Kiwis can find a use for Maggi onion soup mix in almost anything).
  • Molletes, a Mexican delicacy: bread, refried beans, cheese and peppers – spicy, comforting and delicious.
  • Jalebi, a sweet treat from India and West Asia: a deep-fried batter bursting with sugar syrup, often eaten on special occasions such as Holi, Diwali, and Eid.
  • Chocolate chip cookies from the USA (because what is more American than that): you name, and it was in these cookies – chocolate chips, m&m’s, potato chips. YUM.

Spread of food on the kitchen table

Once all the food was laid out, the feast began – no time was wasted in trying a little bit of everything. Our kitchen was quickly filled with chatter, laughter, and bonding over some incredibly tasty food. We all came away from the morning having tried, and learnt something new about our coworkers and their backgrounds, and a hunger (maybe not literally after all the food we had already managed to eat that morning) to continue embracing all the things that make us different.

Our first multicultural morning tea was a massive success, bringing our team together, sharing the foods that mean so much to us, and learning about the foods that mean so much to all our colleagues. A celebration of each other, and the cultures and differences that make Hnry Hnry, is exactly what happened.

This morning tea was a true embodiment of what we hope for all our events, and everyone’s day-to-day experiences at Hnry – the opportunity to try new things, continuous learning, welcoming and embracing all the things that make us different, and celebrating our people.

With all that being said, same time next year?

Keen to join the Hnry team? We’d love to hear from you!
